To Uber or Not to Uber, That Is the Question

December 18, 2015

Matiya-HillAs always welcome back to Brown Girl Green Money, thank you for taking the time to visit. The holidays are among us again, and for some that means shopping, gifts, and quality time with family and friends. Once again, I have the task of remaining financially responsible and purchasing the flyest presents for my love ones ☺ Which brings me to the topic of this post: UBER. Yep, you read it right: UBER. I would like to become an UBER driver (temporarily) to add an additional stream of income for the holidays. That way my debt snowball keeps on rolling AND I’m able to give, buy presents, and stash cash for a rainy day. **Cha-ching**

Simply stated, Uber is using your personal vehicle as a means of transport for those in need of a ride — and getting paid for it! The Uber driver has to set up an Uber profile through the app, once the app is complete you have the option of becoming “available” or “unavailable.” Once you’re available, riders have the option of contacting you for a lift to their desired destination. If you’re unavailable, essentially that means you are not available to offer your services at that particular time. Please check the Uber site for a list of specific details and requirements https://partners.uber.com/join/

I have a few friends and associates that are Uber drivers, and I’ve been told that each driver has the potential to earn $300 to $800 per month (if you drive in a heavily populated/busy area). So obviously the money is an advantage, and so is the ability to create your own schedule. In my opinion, the most significant disadvantages of being an Uber driver would be safety. There have been a few cases of drivers being robbed and or kidnapped. But again, that’s very rare! So what do you think, should I give this Uber thing a try for the holidays? What are you doing for the holidays to make extra money? Please share your tips and if you are an Uber driver out there tell us how that’s working for you.
