Gloria Reyes named new mayoral assistant

 

 

 MADISON —Madison Mayor Paul Soglin has announced that Madison Police Detective Gloria Reyes will be serving in the Mayor’s office as the liaison to a number of agencies. Reyes will replace Astra Miriaku Iheukumere who has accepted another career opportunity.

 

Detective Reyes has served City of Madison residents as a police officer for 12 years. She is currently assigned to the Special Investigations Unit which aims to reduce violent crime. She is co-founder of Amigos en Azul (Friends in Blue) that works to dissolve cultural barriers and build trust between the City of Madison Police Department and the Latino Community. Detective Reyes serves as a Peer Support Officer offering assistance to officers who have been exposed to critical incidents, is a member of the Child Abduction Response Team, and participates in the department’s unconscious bias group which trains law enforcement personnel on cultural identity and bias. She also leads the diversity and inclusion team to address barriers in employment, development, or promotional opportunities within the police department.

 

Detective Reyes' service to her community goes well beyond her normal work duties. She volunteers for a number of community organizations including: Centro Hispano, Dane County Chapter of the National Latino Peace Officer Association, Wisconsin Association of Women Police, and The Boys and Girls Club. A longtime resident of the City of Madison she is a graduate of Madison East High School. She attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison where she received a B.A. degree in Behavioral Science & Law and Criminal Justice. She recently completed the Leadership in Police Organization training.

 

As a Mayoral Assistant, Reyes will work with the Police and Fire Departments, Public Health Madison and Dane County, the Department of Civil Rights, Community Services, and the City Attorney’s office. Her first day in the Mayor’s office will be December 1.
