UW Hospital emergency department nurses receive prestigious award

July 1, 2014

By Toni Morrissey, UW Hospitals and Clinics

MADISON — The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics emergency department this year is one of only 17 recipients of a prestigious award from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA).
The emergency department is among those receiving the Lantern Award that recognizes emergency departments that have demonstrated exceptional and innovative approaches to leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.  This is the second Lantern Award designation for the UW Hospital emergency department, a Level One Trauma Center for both adults and children.  The first was awarded in 2011.
“This award acknowledges the world-class health care provided by our outstanding nurses, physicians and staff,” said Donna Katen-Bahensky, UW Hospital president and CEO.  “Our emergency department team is truly remarkable.”
Only 37 emergency departments have received the Lantern Award since 2011.
The Lantern Award is named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who is credited with changing nursing from an untrained job to a skilled, science-based profession.  She is referred to as the “Lady of the Lamp” for her actions during the Crimean War when she worked deep into the night, bringing her lantern with her as she tended to British soldiers as they slept.
