MILWAUKEE/MADISON — The Center for Resilient Cities is pleased to announce the appointment of Peng Her as Assistant Director of the organization. Peng Her brings Community Development Expertise to new position.
With over 12 years of community development experience, Her most recently held the position of Vice President of Promise Zone and Partnerships for the Urban League of Greater Madison. There, he established Eat Play Bike Placemaking, South Madison Community Night, and administered a community survey that yielded a 30 percent participation rate (700 South Madison residents).
Her currently serves on the City of Madison's Economic Development Committee, working with the Common Council and city staff to facilitate the development of a healthy community in which businesses can locate, innovate, grow, and prosper. Peng is also on the board of directors of the Wisconsin Hmong Chamber of Commerce, and has helped to establish a $250,000 Revolving Loan Fund for entrepreneurs. A former small business owner, Peng operated Taste of Asia restaurant in Madison.
Her is the fourth Hmong nationally to run for state office (State Assembly) in 2008; he also ran for a Common Council seat in Madison in 2011. He is the second Hmong nationally to be nominated to the President's Advisory Commission the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Advisory Council to advise the President on Asian American affairs. Her also served as a member of the Lao Hmong Overseas delegation sanctioned by the U.S. Department of State to visit Laos and establish humanitarian dialogue between the two countries.
The first member of his family to receive a master's degree, Her graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with an MS in Applied Physics. He was also the first member of his family to study abroad, attending Trinity College in Carmarthen, Wales. In addition to his many activities, Her is married and is the proud father of three children. In his spare time, Her enjoys the outdoors going canoeing, camping, fishing, and hiking in his backyard, known to Madisonians as Cherokee Marsh.
