COMMUNITY BUILDER
20 hours per week
The Community Builder is responsible for helping people with developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and concurrent mental health challenges have independent, productive, and satisfying lives through improving their ability to function and contribute in their home, work and community environment. The Community Builder’s focus is twofold; to provide educational experiences and expand the social networks of the she or he works with. The immediate goal is to help people learn to engage in and cope with daily life through improving skills and gaining better control over their personal environment. The long range goal is to enhance community connections and networks of social support through the attainment of new skills and increased self-esteem.
Conduct groups and classes of interest and benefit to individuals: The Community Builder is responsible for developing a plan and curriculum for all classes, obtaining all necessary supplies within a set budget and maintaining progress reports. The Community Builder often gains extra assistance through coordinated work with university interns. Maintenance of our ongoing coordination with the MATC COTA Program to teach social skills classes in the winter and spring is a key part of this position.
Offer classes that are designed to develop or improve skills and to increase independence in daily life. Classes are offered at community centers, on the MATC campus, and at “Cluster Sites.” Cluster Sites are neighborhoods and/ or apartment complexes where several people with disabilities reside. Areas of focus include: social/interpersonal skills, vocational success, leisure activity, appropriate community behavior, independence at home, cooking/nutrition, personal appearance, neighborhood connections, and community safety. A focus should be placed on connecting people who are supported by different residential support agencies and those who have no residential supports.
Excellent verbal and written skills are required. Necessary computer skills include familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, electronic file organization, PDF annotation software, Microsoft Outlook, and electronic calendars.
