Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?” Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative.
Nearly 400 middle and high school students from the Madison area will join with others across the nation by remembering the struggle for civil rights, celebrating the progress that has been made, and acting to address the issues that still challenge our community. The first half of the day will take place at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery on the University of Wisconsin Campus. Students will explore how science and service intersect through workshops, exploration stations, and learning labs. Students will then spend the second half of the day engaged in volunteer projects through the community.
Locally, the event is hosted through a partnership between the Urban League of Greater Madison, The Madison-Dane County Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition, and the UW Madison/Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. More information at www.ulgm.org/ YSD2016.
On Sunday, January 17th, more than 800 youth, families, and community leaders will gather to celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding middle and high school students. Click here to buy your tickets online FOR ONLY $10. (seating is limited, and the event typically does sell out).
The League received nominees this year from 35 different public and private middle and high schools in Dane County. Over 200 students will be recognized. Each awardee has demonstrated excellence in three areas: academic performance: extra-curricular involvement at their school; and leadership and volunteerism in the community. In addition, former recipients of the Madison Metropolitan School District’s Mann Scholarship will announce the 2015 Mann Scholars.
