POLICY ASSOCIATE
30 hours per week
Reports to: Senior Policy Associate
PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: The Center for Family Policy and Practice (CFFPP) is searching for a part-time Policy Associate to support the organization’s policy efforts. CFFPP, established in 1995, is a national nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization based in Madison, Wisconsin. The Center is dedicated to strengthening society through the expansion of opportunities for low-income parents – mothers and fathers – to achieve economic security, and to protect and support their children. Because of limited advocacy and policy analysis from the perspective of very low-income and unemployed men of color, the Center highlights that perspective.
POSITION: The Policy Associate is responsible for a combination of administrative, research, analysis, advocacy, and communications tasks. The successful candidate will have excellent research, analytical, and writing skills; demonstrated experience working on social welfare policy issues; initiative, drive and commitment to promote equity on key issues that impact the lives of men, women and children in low-income communities of color.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conducting research and analysis of existing and emerging program and policy areas on the federal, state, and local levels related to low-income families, especially as they relate to family economic security, income supports, workforce issues, asset development, government-owed debt, child support enforcement, incarceration, EITC, and predatory lending
• Analyzing legislation at both the national and state level to identify opportunities for policy change that improves that lives of low-income parents, children, and families. • Preparing policy summaries that guide internal strategy and action.
• Evaluate projects, programs, and innovative public policy approaches in new or expanding program and policy areas.
• Participating in projects in the lead role, or in a supporting role, to produce policy briefs, memos, and full-length reports as necessary.
• Provide editorial and content feedback on CFFPP’s written pieces, ranging from short pieces (blog posts, email alerts) to long-form publications. QUALIFICATIONS
• Excellent research and analytical skills.
• Ability to analyze problems and propose solutions.
• Two years relevant professional experience in public policy.
• Bachelor’s degree required. Graduate degree in social work, public policy, law or other related field preferred.
• Excellent communication skills, including writing and speaking.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Working knowledge of social welfare issues as well as a demonstrated capacity to continually learn concepts quickly.
• Comfort working under pressure and tight deadlines.
• Ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize activities.
