Betty Franklin- Hammonds Scholarship

December 11, 2013

By The Urban League of Greater Madison

Nominations have been opened for the 30th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast’s Outstanding Young Person award for 2014 and the Betty Franklin Hammond Scholarship. Each Dane County middle and high school is being asked to put forth the name of students to be recognized. In addition, both schools and the larger community are being asked to submit names for the Betty
Franklin Hammonds Scholarship. Students are nominated by schools from all across Dane County based on their academicperformance,
community service, and extra-curricular participation. A maximum of three 9th, three 10th, and three 11th grade students from each Dane County high school and two 6th, two 7th, and two 8th graders from each Dane County middle school will be awarded Outstanding Young Person Certificates. All area Dane County schools (public or private) are eligible and encouraged to nominate students. Applications can be completed online at http://www.ulgm.org/mlknominations. The Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship Fund was created to honor one of Madison’s most dynamic and visionary leaders, Ms. Betty Franklin-Hammonds. With her passing in April 1999, this scholarship was started through a generous endowment from the Madison Community Foundation with subsequent gifts added by friends, family and people in the community. The Betty Franklin-Hammonds Scholarship rewards the accomplishments of graduating seniors seeking to further their education beyond high school, with special attention given to those who have faced particular economic and/or social obstacles
on their journey to educational advancement. For 30 years, the Urban League has hosted one of the largest family observances of the King Holiday in Wisconsin. The Outstanding Young Person Breakfast, held on Sunday during the King Holiday weekend, attracts more than 800 youth, families, and community leaders. The breakfast is open to the public and is one of the oldest and most well attended family observations of the King Holiday in Dane County. Children, families, elected officials, business leaders, school staff, and community members continue to make this a must attend event!Tickets will be available for purchase in Mid-December.
