AVID/TOPS students learn about the inner workings of CUNA Mutual

August 12, 2014

MADISON — For the entire summer, five AVID/TOPS college students have been completing a full time (40 hours per week) professional internship at CUNA Mutual Group, joining about 80 other college students to learn about the inner workings of a national mutual insurance company.

Julian Walters will begin his first year at North Dakota State College of Sciences in the fall. He has been running data on the profitability of insurance sales in different states. He's also been processing claims and distinguishing between potential customers who are "yes," "no," or "want to know more". This summer, he has developed the skill set of being able to work independently with little supervision.

Carlos Hernandez is a rising sophomore at Madison College. His internship is at a broad level, shadowing a variety of different sections within the marketing department. He's been researching what kind of insurance mailing ad designs are most likely to be attractive to potential customers.

Tony Maduka is a rising senior at UW Madison. He has been working with the hundreds of Credit Unions that CUNA Mutual serves. He has been working with his supervisor to determine how more high school and college aged students can be financially literate, pick affordable colleges, and become members of credit unions.

Tray Brunner is a rising transfer sophomore at UW Madison and Daniel Yancey is a rising sophomore at Edgewood College. They have been working in the Information Technology Department. They've learned a lot about the nuances of communicating across departments and with upper management.
